Grade 5 Homework Policy
In grade 5, there is a structured homework policy in our classroom. Homework will vary from night to night (none over the weekend!), but the primary focus will be review of skills that have been taught during the day or throughout the week. In addition, it prepares students for taking on the work demands and responsibility that middle school presents. Please check your child's agenda book nightly to review homework assignments and/or long-term projects.
Homework should be completed as independently as possible. If someone supports your child with the homework, please write a quick note so that I know it may be a skill that needs reviewing. Likewise, I certainly do not want your child taking an extended period of time completing homework and getting overwhelmed or frustrated. As the parent, I will let you determine the length of time that your child can maintain a positive focus on homework. If he/she struggles with the assignment, please just jot a quick note at the top. I always ask that he/she try their best! If your child repeatedly misses homework assignments, we will work as a team to provide the most beneficial solution.
As a parent of four young children, all of whom are school-age and receive nightly homework, I understand fully the demands of after school activities. For example, in the fall, all four of my children play soccer. My daughter also does gymnastics...let's just say the fall is the easiest of the sports seasons. Factor in of course family time, friends, and appointments, time amazingly slips away. Consistent homework routine works best...it will benefit your child in middle school! Plan a specific time and spot to complete homework. Plan ahead if you know you will be busy on a particular night.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
